Dubai Loop project enters next phase as Elon Musk’s company advances tunnelling work

Sheikh Hamdan met with senior officials from The Boring Company on Tuesday.

The ambitious Dubai Loop project has moved onto the next phase of its development.

The Boring Company, owned by Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has been tasked with the delivering the groundbreaking development.

Dubai Loop is a major mobility project designed to tackle the city’s congestion problems.

Upon completion, it will see commuters across Dubai being ferried about in electric vehicles in underground tunnels.

The Dubai Loop is expected to dramatically reduce travel times across the city.

The next phase of the project has now commenced and work currently includes the assembly of the tunnel boring machine and the casting of concrete segments that will line the tunnels.

On Tuesday, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, met with Steve Davis, president of US-based The Boring Company.

The meeting, which was held at Sheikh Hamdan’s office in Dubai on September 29, reviewed the progress of the Dubai Loop and the expected timelines for completion.

The meeting also included senior officials from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and The Boring Company.

The Government of Dubai Media Office said the project will use advanced technologies to enhance the efficiency and flow of movement in high-density urban areas.

Maiden Route

The first phase of the new mobility transformation project will see Dubai International Financial Centre being linked with Dubai Mall.

Dubai Mall is one of the biggest tourists attractions in the city.

The first route of the Dubai Loop will be a 4-mile (6.4km) pilot route with four stations dotted along between DIFC and Dubai Mall.

The full project is expected to encompass 14 miles (22.5km) with 19 stations in total.

Densely populated parts of the city such as the financial district in Business Bay and the World Trade Centre

The state-of-the-art tunnelling technology deployed by The Boring Company is intended to enable faster construction, lower costs and less disruption to existing roads and utilities than the conventional transport systems currently in use across the city.

It has also been revealed that the pilot route will carry around 13,000 passengers a day.

That admission was made by Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA.

When phase two is completed by 20230, it will serve approximately 30,000 passengers a day.

“The project represents a qualitative addition to Dubai’s transport ecosystem, as it enhances integration between different mobility modes and provides flexible and efficient first- and last-mile solutions,” Al Tayer said.
